Life, the very essence of our existence, is a phenomenon that has puzzled humanity for centuries. Philosophers, scientists, and theologians have grappled with the meaning of life, seeking to unravel the mysteries that encompass our existence. While there may not be one definitive answer, exploring the various perspectives on the meaning of life can offer profound insights and provoke deep contemplation.
Life can be represented in many ways. It can be described scientifically, philosophically, or spiritually. From a scientific standpoint, life can be defined as a complex set of biological processes that enable organisms to grow, reproduce, and adapt to their environment. The existentialist philosophers emphasize that people have freedom and responsibility in creating meaning in life—meaning in life is not something to be discovered but to be realized.
For you, what is the meaning of life? Have you asked yourself this question? Have you ever wondered what life really is? What your whole existence is all about—is your life worth living?
……….
According to Chamary (2019), it is surprisingly hard to come up with an adequate definition of life—the real-world interpretations do not highlight what life truly is. Operationally, it implies someone or something is alive, distinguishing the living from nonliving ones. On the other hand, biology considers cells as the fundamental structure of life or its basic unit. Chamary (2019) also stated that the meaning of life may be an indefinite notion. However, it should not be vague.
According to Dr. Harry Fuchs (n.d.), life is a self-organizing chemistry that reproduces itself and passes on its evolved features stored in DNA. He further contended that life is simply a meaningless accident caused by the laws of physics at work in an absurd cosmos.
According to Baranski (n.d.), life is the part of existence that processes, acts, reacts, assesses, and grows.
Furthermore, a human being is endowed with rationality and knowledge, which made us wonder about the deeper meaning of life—that curiosity paved the way for more definitions of life.
We might say that life is a blessing—having the opportunity to get up each morning and face the world again is a gift from above.
We can say that life is a journey—an endless road that we travel to explore ourselves, the world, and our dreams.
We can say life is incredible—feeling the love out of hate, seeing the light through the darkness, and feeling the bliss out of sadness. Getting through several hardships and being able to rise is incredible.
Aside from all the lively interpretations of life, I am aware that other people's perceptions of life may not be as positive as we had thought. Some undeniably gloomy days and obstacles continuously knock us down, making us question our existence. Because of these obstacles, some of us lose sight of the meaning of life.
Your personal battle may cause you to perceive life as penance at times, but if you look at it with optimism, you will see the prize—you being resilient and having stronger faith through complicated life situations. It is an astonishing ability to have in a life full of struggles. And that also gives life meaning.
It is critical to recognize that the meaning of life is a very personal and subjective concept. What may be meaningful to one person may hold little significance for another. For some, the desire for knowledge, artistic expression, or contributing to the betterment of society may be the driving force in life.
Some of us can unlock the complex meaning of life. Some can define it with simplicity, either of the two. All of us can give life its essence the way we understand and look at it. You need to look deeply and hear the silent message telling you the meaning of life—your heart communicates the meaning of life to you.
Before we wrap up, I like to share what life means to me.
For me, life is a treasure trove of knowledge. It contains different learnings, aspects, and philosophies waiting to be disclosed. We may face numerous challenges while searching for the treasure chest. To uncover the treasure chest, we must explore and dig deep.
It's the same as seeking life's meaning. We must explore, and we need to think deeply and process all the learnings we acquire while traveling on our path. Furthermore, once you find your treasure, you will be transformed into the person you are meant to be and capable of digging up more knowledge.
We can also learn a lot from other people's life experiences and perspectives, and they can learn from ours—trade knowledge per se. Life can be explored to collect knowledge and wisdom.
There are more things in this world that define life—we can all give life significance based on how we see it.
Keep holding on to life because life is worth living.
“In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on."
- Robert Frost
