Let us talk about success and achievement. What are success and achievement? According to Jeffrey Klubeck (2018), success is an accomplishment of a goal. It is also used to describe the status of a person—how successful a person is. Sherry Starnes (2015) explained that success is used in fulfilling the situation necessary to reach the goal. If you are successful in life, it paves the way for achievement (Starnes, 2015). Both of them discussed that success is the attainment of what you aim for. In terms of achievement, it comes from having so much success over a long period (Klubeck, 2018). In short, success leads to achievement. Achievement arrived by having more success along your journey.
……….
What does it really take for a person to be considered as successful or achiever? We often refer to a person’s wealth, status, assets, degree, etc., to measure the success or the things they achieved.
Success and achievement are correlated with each other. However, achievement does not guarantee one’s success—you can achieve a lot with an unsuccessful result (Klubeck, 2018). For example, a participant in the art contest who won 3rd place is an achievement. Even a 3rd place is also a winner. This results from the artist’s hard work and talent (though it is not successful, the result cannot be achieved without doing several things successfully).
Both success and achievement come in place when we evaluate someone’s life. Is it really limited to those tangible things a person has? Is it only about the enormous success a person can brag or show off? Klubeck (2018) stated that success is a state of mind. “You can feel successful without tangible accomplishments.” Starnes (2015) mentioned success is a state of being. This means you can see yourself as a successful person for those you have achieved in your current situation.
Sherry Starnes (2015) explained that achievement is the physical measurement of your success. There should be tangible results of your accomplished goals that have the feeling of progress increases to consider you have achieved something. However, I want everyone not to focus solely on the big and extravagant things. Yes, there is nothing wrong with having enormous dreams or goals in life, but do not let it narrow your perspective in terms of your success and achievement. Even small tangible things that you accomplished are considered as an achievement.
Success and achievement are not about you already accomplished the things that you aim for, and you are already on the top of the pedestal. It is not only limited by those big things in this world that you wanted to achieve. Success and achievement are not only about the material things you wanted to have or the status quo you want to be part of. It can be all the knowledge you’ve learned, the skills you acquired and sharpened, and the good habits and character you developed—all of those things you have attained along the way.
Even finding out your passion and your purpose is an achievement for your personal growth. Learning something new even a little bit is an achievement, As long as it is from the efforts and hard work you exerted. And soon, it will lead you to the great things you can’t even imagine. Success happens in different aspects of our lives, not just on one side. You can be successful in every way; you just have to open your eyes to see it more clearly than usual.
According to Sherry Starnes (2015), success is when you know yourself the reason for your strive. If you are fulfilling something meaningful to you, such as your passion, career, skills, interest, well, then you are successful. Achievement is when you pursue and attain the things you want, and success comes from knowing why you want those things you desire.
To able to focus on your own footsteps and to see the little success and achievement you are making, there are practical things that you must do.
First, be happy for other persons who are also making their own progress, achievement, and succeeding in life—you need to learn to be happy for others. You will not be contented with your own progress and achievement if you continue hating their accomplishments. That is why you must start being joyful for everyone. Let go of the envy in your heart—put away your desire to downgrade their success to be better than anyone else. You do not need to be above all the people from time to time. Life is not a competition for every one of us. It never is. Being better than anyone else is not necessary. You just need to be better than you used to be—there is no need to have only one winner because all of us are champions. That is why we must focus on our own progress.
If you learned to be happy for others, it’s time for you to be blissful for yourself—you must learn how to appreciate and be contented with your own progress. You will continue living with a heavy heart if you will not be contented and happy and for yourself. And that kind of burden inside you will hold you back from achieving your best peak. You don’t need to compare your accomplishments to someone else’s. It is like we all have different paths, and each way has its own difficulty. That’s why some people can easily walk on their way, and some are don’t. You don’t need to compare. Keep doing what you are doing—keep walking, and be happy in your own path and the actions you are making every step of the way. Also, being contented and cheerful with your own progress will keep you doing things consistently to push you to discover something new.
You see, you don’t need to look at someone else every time you accomplished a single thing—just be proud of yourself that you did.
Once you’ve learned to be happy for others and contented with your own progress, it is time for you to do the next one...you must go on. You can continue making progress towards your goal without heavy baggage in your heart, without being distracted by others, and without comparing yourself.
Don’t forget to celebrate—that little progress you are making, no matter how big or small your achievement is. It is still something that we must be thankful for. Because it is an essential element for your future success.
This mindset could be transitory for some reason. Thus, when you find yourself hanging again, you must remind yourself of these four essential things until you finally master them.
Lastly, a simple reminder. Keep in mind that you are still walking on your own path, and you have to reach every checkpoint until you make it to your destination. Keep going towards success. Until then, continue making progress in different areas of your life and celebrate your little success.
“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.
- Benjamin Franklin
